Jasonic's Favorites: Guardians of the Galaxy

Image
Hello, and good evening, Internet! Like with The Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy are not one specific character, but rather a group of characters, all of which I enjoy so I'm including them alongside the Avengers in this blog anyway -- that and both groups have some of my favorite MCU movies. Released in 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the first unexpected hits of the MCU with its sci-fi B-movie tone, befitting Earthly soundtrack, memorable, likable characters, and overall talent involved. I, initially, wasn't hugely interested despite the film coming out on my birthday (August 1st), but I had seen an iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy group in the Marvel cartoon, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Prior to getting the film on Blu-ray the following year, I knew somewhat what I was getting from certain characters such as Star-Lord (Peter Quill), Rocket Raccoon, and Groot, a zany list of characters that sound and -- and in the case of Rocket and Gr...

Jasonic's Favorites: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Image
Hello, and good evening, Internet! This was the only Harry Potter I reviewed on my previous blog and now that I've done the previous two, I am redoing this one with my new format and updated thoughts! Released in 2004, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is regarded by many fans and critics to be both the best book in the book series as well as the best film in the film franchise -- and I agree with both. It is widely known that the reason for this movie's and the franchise's success has to do with how it both evolves and matures the franchise, essentially growing along with the audience. Whereas the first two movies were more child-friendly -- Chamber of Secrets less so than Sorcerer's Stone -- this third year of Harry Potter's years at Hogwarts is his first year as a teenager and therefore the movie leans more into the teen angst side of things with a more serious plot, a more muted color palette, less cheery setpieces, and less extravagant music to boot...

Jasonic's Favorites: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Image
Hello, and good evening, Internet! You might remember I did the first MCU Cap film on this and my old blog, however, I shockingly never got around to this one, which is debatably my favorite of the Cap trilogy -- soon to be quadrilogy unless the upcoming film doesn't count because it's a new character taking up the mantle. Regardless, I am happy to finally get around to this one, which was the most fantastic Marvel movie of its time -- 10+ years ago (my how time flies)! Released in 2014, Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the highly anticipated sequel to the mostly successful Captain America: The First Avenger -- and the character's first solo outing since the breakout success of The Avengers. It was the first of a few MCU titles directed by the now iconic duo of Anthony and Joe Russo and their directing mastery of MCU films really shines here -- arguably brighter than their later films, but not because their other films were bad. With the steady success that the...

Jasonic's Favorites: Batman & Robin

Image
Hello, and good evening, Internet! The title may as well be clickbait because most people despise this movie. As with Batman Forever, however, I am simply reviewing this movie as a means of going over Batman's history in cinema for the purpose of this blog. Released in 1997, Batman & Robin is one of -- if not THE most -- despised comic book movies of all time for a number of reasons. For one, Tim Burton was not involved in this production in any way, meaning that his influence was never felt. While Joel Schumacher as a director could be dark even in deleted scenes of Batman Forever, he made the executive decision to go full lighthearted camp for this movie, resulting in this movie's justified, but in some ways undeserved, backlash it receives even to this day. On top of that, the actor playing Batman was replaced AGAIN this time by George Clooney, an actor known for more comical performances, Arnold Schwarzenegger is at his campiest with delivering some of the most in...

Jasonic's Favorites: Spider-Man 3

Image
Hello, and good evening, Internet! As with the previous Spider-Man reviews, this is not copied from my old blog, but rather reorganized with more mature thoughts. Enjoy! Released in 2007, Spider-Man 3 was the highly anticipated third installment of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy. Riding on the success of Spider-Man 2, this threequel had a lot of hype to live up to and to some it did while others were less than pleased with it at the time of release. It was the highest grossing Spider-Man film at the time, but the reviews back then made it sound less than favorable back then due to a number of factors that many are aware of nowadays. It was still considered good by many shockingly enough, but the majority thought it was the worst superhero movie of that decade alongside X-Men: The Last Stand especially after the initial success of the trilogy early on. Much of it had to do with studio influence cramming a bunch of characters into the story, the decisions to further complicate Pe...

Jasonic's Favorites: Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed

Image
Hello, and good evening, Internet! It's Halloween season once more and so I figured Scooby-Doo would be the film I review for this month. I did the first film around this time last year therefore it was inevitable I got to this one. This is also the one film I've done for any blog where I hadn't seen it for myself yet -- except for video essays showing lots of clips -- so in a way, I will be experiencing this with fresh eyes. Released in 2004, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed was made following the box office success of Scooby-Doo The Movie from two years prior. While it ultimately wasn't as successful as the original in the box office and received even lower negative reviews from critics, fans of the franchise and the actors associated with this ill-fated duology of Scooby live action movies do enjoy it plus the original as guilty pleasures -- I know I enjoy the first movie on occasion and feel it's misunderstood. One of the big reasons some don't think t...
