Jasonic's Favorites: Kung Fu Panda 3

Image
Hello, and good evening, Internet! Kung Fu Panda 1-3 are a perfect trilogy in my mind and though I have yet to see the 4th one, I am thankful for this series now. Released in 2016, Kung Fu Panda 3 was the inevitable third installment in the Kung Fu Panda trilogy -- now quadrilogy as of last year. After the second one succeeded in the eyes of many kids and adults, expectations for were high for this one to do well, if not surpass its predecessors. Financially, it did great despite being the lowest-grossing film in the series according to Wikipedia. Critical responses were certainly close to the other movies and while fan and audience opinions may vary, there are plenty who believe this caps off the original trilogy of Kung Fu Panda pretty neatly. While I didn't get to see this movie immediately due to being deep in college studies when it came out, I eventually watched it due to a renewed interest in Kung Fu Panda in recent years and I see where some people are coming from as ...

Jasonic's Favorites: The Amazing Spider-Man

Hello, and good evening, Internet! With this being the movie that launched my Spider-Man fandom, a thousand channels on YouTube, and further encouraged reboots everywhere, this film is special in a lot of ways as well as having the distinction of being the first Spidey review on this blog that I've done from scratch. Released in 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man was Sony's back-up plan for Sam Raimi canceling his plans for Spider-Man 4 to be released in 2011 with Sony desperately wanting to maintain the rights to the character. This certainly caused a lot of backlash from the Spider-Man fandom based on the fact that back then it denied us the chance to see Spider-Man swing into the then-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as how many believed it was something of a "Dark Knight ripoff". While the comparison is sound given that this reboot follows in the footsteps of Batman Begins with its darker tone, retelling of the iconic origin, and deeper, more personal them...

Jasonic's Favorites: Batman Begins

Hello, and good evening, Internet! The long awaited, often imitated Dark Knight Trilogy is the reason I ended up liking Batman in the first place and I'm happy to finally get to it as of this review! Released in 2005, Batman Begins was the first theatrical Batman movie in eight years following the disaster many claim that Batman & Robin was despite its present cult following. Directed by the renowned Christopher Nolan, starring Christian Bale, and composed by Hans Zimmer, this movie took the Dark Knight back to his dark roots by grounding it in heavy realism and indeliberately revolutionized the superhero genre as a result. This film and its sequels -- mainly The Dark Knight -- have been praised to death for following such masterful filmmaking rules, writing such beloved characters and story arcs, and creating undeniable meme material from the memorable lines and performances such as Christian Bale's iconic "bat voice". At the time of release, people lauded ...

Jasonic's Favorites: Guardians of the Galaxy

Hello, and good evening, Internet! Like with The Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy are not one specific character, but rather a group of characters, all of which I enjoy so I'm including them alongside the Avengers in this blog anyway -- that and both groups have some of my favorite MCU movies. Released in 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the first unexpected hits of the MCU with its sci-fi B-movie tone, befitting Earthly soundtrack, memorable, likable characters, and overall talent involved. I, initially, wasn't hugely interested despite the film coming out on my birthday (August 1st), but I had seen an iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy group in the Marvel cartoon, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Prior to getting the film on Blu-ray the following year, I knew somewhat what I was getting from certain characters such as Star-Lord (Peter Quill), Rocket Raccoon, and Groot, a zany list of characters that sound and -- and in the case of Rocket and Gro...

Jasonic's Favorites: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Hello, and good evening, Internet! This was the only Harry Potter I reviewed on my previous blog and now that I've done the previous two, I am redoing this one with my new format and updated thoughts! Released in 2004, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is regarded by many fans and critics to be both the best book in the book series as well as the best film in the film franchise -- and I agree with both. It is widely known that the reason for this movie's and the franchise's success has to do with how it both evolves and matures the franchise, essentially growing along with the audience. Whereas the first two movies were more child-friendly -- Chamber of Secrets less so than Sorcerer's Stone -- this third year of Harry Potter's years at Hogwarts is his first year as a teenager and therefore the movie leans more into the teen angst side of things with a more serious plot, a more muted color palette, less cheery setpieces, and less extravagant music to boot...
